In response to the significant decrease in transformer deliveries experienced last year, Austin Energy has devised a focused approach encompassing four key strategies.
The utility's first strategy involves developing a Material Resource Plan to accurately predict future demand, identify incoming supplies, and explore alternative sources to combat potential shortages. Additionally, Austin Energy is modifying its equipment specification standards to increase flexibility and improve the chances of finding suitable supplies to meet customer demands. The utility is also broadening its sourcing methods by looking beyond U.S. borders and adjusting supplier contracts to expand the pool of available options. Lastly, Austin Energy aims to streamline processes by enhancing customer communication regarding lead times and permitting customers to procure compatible equipment themselves.
Stuart Reilly, the interim general manager of Austin Energy, acknowledged the persistent global supply scarcities and emphasized the utility's commitment to exploring all available options to meet customer requirements. Despite recent improvements in transformer deliveries, Austin Energy expects nationwide supply chain disruptions to continue due to labor shortages and increased demand for electrical components. These challenges may further extend lead times for transformers, making the utility's proactive measures crucial in ensuring a reliable power supply for its customers.
