A major delivery of a supergrid transformer is set to take place at Cellarhead substation in Staffordshire on Monday, 2 June 2025, as part of routine infrastructure upgrades by National Grid.
The new transformer, which replaces an older unit reaching the end of its operational life, will help maintain reliable electricity supplies across the region. This activity is part of planned maintenance and is not linked to the recently proposed substation expansion plans.
The transformer is being transported by Allelys Heavy Haulage, with support from a police escort to ensure public safety and manage traffic. The journey will begin on Sunday, 1 June, departing from Sundon near Luton, and travel via the M1 and A50 to Uttoxeter. The final leg to Cellarhead will occur on Monday via the A520, A52, and Rownall Road.
Residents along Cellarhead Road and Rownall Road have been asked to keep the route clear between 12:00pm and 1:30pm on Monday to allow the convoy safe passage.
According to Jake Roche, Project Manager at National Grid, the project team has coordinated with local authorities to reduce disruption, and electricity supplies will remain unaffected during the process.
Once on-site, the transformer will be installed and commissioned, with the old equipment to be dismantled and fully recycled.
