Virginia Beach Opens New Oceanfront Substation to Enhance Public Safety
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Beach has unveiled a new police substation at the Oceanfront, reinforcing its commitment to public safety in the bustling area. The grand opening of the 2nd Precinct Substation took place on Tuesday, August 29, at 2112 Atlantic Avenue. Prominent figures including Mayor Bobby Dyer and Police Chief Paul Neudigate were present to inaugurate the facility.
Situated just one mile away from the 2nd Precinct Police Station at 820 Virginia Beach Boulevard, this substation will cater to the needs of first responders working along the Oceanfront. Officers patrolling the area can conveniently use the substation to complete paperwork and take short breaks, enhancing their efficiency.
Chief Neudigate emphasized that this initiative is about more than just law enforcement. He stated, "It’s not just a police substation, it’s really public safety... serve our residents, serve our tourists and provide an exemplary customer service experience."
The idea for the substation was introduced in June 2021, with funding approved in 2022 and construction subsequently initiated. The building, formerly housing a bar named “The Boxx,” has been transformed into a hub for enhanced security measures. Chief Neudigate referred to a tragic incident in March 2021 that drove the realization for change, stating, "It took a tragedy for us to realize that we needed to make some drastic changes and make a plea to Council that we need to invest in the resort area."
The Oceanfront substation is part of a broader strategy aimed at fortifying the safety of Virginia Beach. Captain Harry McBrien emphasized the collaborative nature of this approach, encompassing various technologies, partnerships, and initiatives to ensure a safer environment.
