Virginia Transformer has delivered a custom-built 2 MVA, 13.8/0.48 kV rectifier duty transformer to the New York City Transit Authority for the 82nd Road underground substation in Queens. The new unit is part of a multi-substation renewal initiative and will support the Queens Boulevard Line (QBL)—a critical route used by over 250,000 riders daily.
This infrastructure upgrade plays a vital role in maintaining the reliability of one of the world’s busiest subway systems. With 248 miles of routes and over 2 billion annual riders, the New York City Subway system depends heavily on dependable electrical infrastructure.
Engineered to meet exacting specifications for rectifier duty, the transformer will support continuous, high-load service in a demanding transit environment. Virginia Transformer highlighted the project's tight turnaround and technical complexity as a key success, from design through to delivery and installation.
The unit is expected to enhance both service resilience and energy efficiency across the QBL corridor.
