NextEra Energy and Exelon to Build Major Pennsylvania-West Virginia Transmission Line
NextEra Energy Transmission and Exelon have been recommended by PJM Interconnection, the regional grid operator, to develop a major transmission project spanning Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The approximately 220-mile, 765-kilovolt (kV) high-voltage line is designed to enhance grid reliability, support economic growth, and provide affordable electricity to local residents and businesses.
The transmission line, capable of transferring 2–3 times more power than conventional 500-kV lines while reducing transmission losses by 50%, is expected to improve resilience during peak demand and minimize the environmental footprint due to fewer required towers. The project would facilitate around 7 gigawatts (GW) of power, supporting large-scale industrial investments and job creation in the region.
John Ketchum, NextEra Energy chairman and CEO, emphasized the project’s role in building a stronger, more resilient grid and expanding low-cost energy access for millions of families and businesses. Calvin Butler, Exelon president and CEO, highlighted the collaboration as pivotal for ensuring reliable and affordable energy while driving regional economic growth. Senator Dave McCormick (R-PA) noted the line’s potential to stabilize electricity prices, create jobs, and support ongoing energy and industrial investments in Pennsylvania.
The PJM Board is expected to vote on final approval in early 2026. The project aligns with Pennsylvania’s $92 billion power generation investment and West Virginia’s 50 GW energy plan, contributing to both states’ energy infrastructure modernization goals.
NextEra Energy Transmission and Exelon plan to work closely with local communities to bring the project to completion and ensure long-term benefits for customers and stakeholders.
