NKT Secures $2.55B Contract for UK’s Eastern Green Link 3 HVDC Cable Project
NKT has signed a contract worth more than $2.55 billion (€2.2 billion) to deliver the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the UK’s Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) transmission project.
The agreement was awarded by a joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission, which are responsible for major electricity grid infrastructure across Great Britain. The project represents the largest contract for a single cable project in NKT’s history.
Under the deal, NKT will provide a turnkey solution including the design, manufacturing, and installation of a 525 kV HVDC power cable system spanning approximately 680 kilometers. The system will include both onshore and offshore sections, while civil works will be managed by the joint venture partners.
Once completed, Eastern Green Link 3 will have a transmission capacity of up to 2 GW and is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2033. The project aims to strengthen the UK electricity transmission network by enabling large volumes of renewable energy generated in northern Scotland to be transported to demand centers in the south.
According to Claes Westerlind, president and CEO of NKT, the agreement marks a significant milestone for the company and reflects its ongoing collaboration with the UK grid operators.
Eastern Green Link 3 forms part of a wider program of grid reinforcement projects designed to improve the ability of Great Britain’s electricity network to integrate renewable energy sources and support the country’s energy transition. The link is expected to provide power for up to two million homes and businesses once operational.
