NREL Launches EMAPS Facility for Clean Energy

17 Sep 2024
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has officially broken ground on its new Energy Materials and Processing at Scale (EMAPS) facility at its South Table Mountain Campus in Golden, Colorado. This 127,000-square-foot lab will foster collaboration between industry partners, universities, and other Department of Energy (DOE) labs to accelerate energy materials innovations from lab-scale to market-ready products.

The new facility, scheduled for completion in 2027, will play a key role in advancing clean energy technologies, including energy storage, sustainable chemicals, and grid modernization. JE Dunn Construction and SmithGroup were selected to design and build the facility, which aims for LEED Gold certification, incorporating sustainable strategies like reclaimed gray water and heat reclaim technologies.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Martin Keller, NREL Director, expressed excitement for the new capabilities EMAPS will bring, enabling NREL to drive advancements in energy materials research and commercialization. Derek Passarelli, DOE's Principal Deputy Under Secretary for Science and Innovation, highlighted the facility's role in keeping the U.S. at the forefront of energy innovation, emphasizing the development of hybrid technologies essential for the transition to a clean energy future.
