Ocean Winds SouthCoast Wind Project Receives Key Massachusetts Approvals

28 Oct 2024
The state of Massachusetts has granted approval for Ocean Winds' 1287MW SouthCoast Wind 1 project to construct and operate onshore transmission facilities at Brayton Point, Somerset. The project, now permitted for construction, is expected to start delivering power to the grid by 2030.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued a license for nearshore equipment and related work, and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management has completed the project's Federal Consistency Review, marking another milestone in the project's development.

"These important permitting milestones bring our project closer to construction. We are grateful to the Commonwealth's thorough review and look forward to providing clean power, good jobs, and economic growth to the region," said Jennifer Flood, Head of Permitting for SouthCoast Wind and Ocean Winds North America.

The project's offshore lease area, located 23 miles south of Nantucket in federal waters, includes a cable route that traverses federal and Massachusetts state waters, Rhode Island's Sakonnet River, and portions of Portsmouth, RI, ending at Mt. Hope Bay. Construction of the array is anticipated to begin in late 2025.
