Ofgem Approves $37 Billion Upgrade to UK Energy Networks
Ofgem has approved a $37.4 billion (£28 billion) infrastructure program to upgrade the United Kingdom’s energy networks, marking one of the largest commitments to modernize the nation’s electricity grid and support future demand.
The regulator said the investment will fund 80 transmission projects across the country over the next five years, aiming to strengthen system reliability, expand capacity, and accelerate the transition to a more electrified economy. According to Ofgem, the upgrades are designed to create a “future-ready” grid better equipped to handle growing power flows and connect new renewable energy projects.
A significant portion of the package supports ongoing network maintenance, but Ofgem emphasized that the plan primarily focuses on enhancing electricity transmission infrastructure. This includes expanding high-voltage capacity to move more renewable power across regions and improving system resilience.
The investment is expected to raise consumer energy bills modestly by 2031, with Ofgem estimating a net increase of less than $4 (£3) per month. The regulator says strict cost controls are in place, including staged funding releases and clawback mechanisms.
Jonathan Brearley, Ofgem’s CEO, said network operators will be held to “on-time and on-budget” delivery standards to ensure value for consumers.
National Grid welcomed the decision, noting that the investment will help maintain high reliability while nearly doubling the power that can be moved across the country.
Earlier this year, Ofgem also introduced rules enabling early access to nearly $6.1 billion (£4 billion) for critical transmission equipment, aimed at speeding up connections for renewable projects.
