Oman Electricity Transmission Company Boosts Grid Capacity in Nizwa

12 Oct 2023

In a significant infrastructure enhancement, the Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) has announced the successful completion of the Nizwa Grid Station upgrade. This project, which saw the transformation of the station from 132 kilovolts to 220 kilovolts, involved the installation of 220 kV overhead transmission lines connecting the new Izki grid station to Nizwa.

The project also included the addition of a 500 mega-volt-ampere, 400/220-kilovolt transformer to the new Izki grid station. These improvements not only align with the electricity transmission Security Standard requirements but also significantly enhance the reliability of the Transmission Network in Al-Dakhiliyah Governorate.

Eng. Masoud Al-Riyami, the Chief Operating Officer at OETC, highlighted the company's commitment to strategic projects aimed at bolstering the performance and availability of the electricity transmission network across Oman. This undertaking is in response to the nation's economic development, urban expansion, and growing demand in various sectors.

Since its establishment in 2005, OETC has been dedicated to advancing the availability and reliability of Oman's electricity transmission network. This has been achieved through the implementation of various strategic projects and the incorporation of cutting-edge technologies, adapting to the evolving energy landscape, including the integration of renewable energy sources.

It's essential to note that OETC, a member of the Nama Group, holds the sole responsibility for transmitting and dispatching electricity throughout the Sultanate of Oman. The company plays a vital role in transmitting electricity from generation stations to distributed load centers across all governorates. The transmission network operates at a voltage of 132 kV and above, covering the majority of the Sultanate's governorates, whether in the north or the south. OETC also manages the interconnection lines between Oman and the Gulf interconnection network, operating at a voltage of 220 kV.
