Ontario Launches Consultations on Transmission Projects to Boost Grid Reliability

12 Jun 2025
Ontario is planning to enhance its electricity transmission infrastructure to meet rising demand across the province. Following last week's announcement of a third transmission line in downtown Toronto, the government has identified two additional potential lines and several major upgrades as priority projects.

Electricity demand in Ontario is projected to increase by 75 percent over the next 25 years, with industrial demand alone expected to grow by approximately 40 percent within five years. To address this, the province is launching consultations to prioritize three key transmission projects aimed at improving power delivery and grid reliability.

The proposed projects include a new transmission line from Bowmanville to the Greater Toronto Area, which will connect new generation sources including Darlington small modular reactors (SMRs) 2, 3, and 4 to the grid. Additional proposals involve a new line from Windsor to Lakeshore and upgrades to existing lines between Orangeville and Barrie.

The government is also backing upgrades to current lines between Manby and Riverside Junction in Toronto. Declaring these projects as priorities would streamline review processes by the Ontario Energy Board, allowing faster approvals and development.

These infrastructure enhancements are expected to support growing communities, expand local manufacturing, facilitate greenhouse operations, and integrate new nuclear generation into the provincial grid.
