Ørsted and SRP Launch Arizona’s Largest Solar and Battery Storage Project

11 Oct 2024
Ørsted and Salt River Project (SRP) have officially launched the Eleven Mile Solar Center, one of the largest co-located solar and battery energy storage projects in the United States. Located in Pinal County, Arizona, the project includes a 300 MW solar farm paired with a 300 MW/1200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This marks a significant milestone for Ørsted, which has invested $20 billion in U.S. energy generation.

The Eleven Mile Solar Center is SRP's largest co-located solar and BESS project, powering 65,000 homes and serving key clients, including Meta's data center in Mesa. The project will also deliver $80 million in tax revenue to the local community and has generated over 1,000 construction jobs.

David Hardy, Group EVP and CEO Americas at Ørsted, emphasized the importance of pairing solar energy with battery storage to meet growing electricity demand, particularly in fast-expanding states like Arizona. The project is expected to play a critical role in supporting SRP's decarbonization goals, which include doubling clean energy generation in the Phoenix metropolitan area over the next decade.

Arizona Corporate Commissioner Lea Marquez Peterson and local officials highlighted the project's economic and environmental benefits, underscoring how clean energy investments can diversify resources and ensure grid reliability.

The Eleven Mile Solar Center adds to Ørsted's growing U.S. onshore portfolio, which now exceeds 5,000 MW, with more projects expected to come online by year-end.
