Ørsted’s Borkum Riffgrund 3 Delivers First Power to German Grid

4 Dec 2025
Ørsted has begun power generation at its Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, delivering first electricity to the national grid. The project, co-owned by Nuveen Infrastructure, has an installed capacity of 913MW, making it one of the largest offshore wind developments currently under construction in Germany.

Located around 72km off the German coast, the wind farm spans roughly 75km² and consists of 83 turbines, each rated at 11MW. The project is also Ørsted’s first offshore wind farm in Germany to be built without an offshore substation; instead, the turbines are connected via a 66kV system to the DolWin epsilon offshore converter platform operated by TenneT.

Construction drew on supply chains across Europe, with turbine components and foundations sourced from Denmark and Germany, subsea cables from France and Germany, and installation vessels from Belgium and the Netherlands.

The project is supported by a series of long-term corporate power purchase agreements totaling 786MW, signed with Amazon, BASF, Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group, Covestro, and Google. The agreements run for 10 to 25 years and are expected to secure price stability for both project developers and offtakers.

Borkum Riffgrund 3 is scheduled for full commissioning in Q1 2026. Together with the recently completed Gode Wind 3 project, Ørsted’s installed offshore wind capacity in Germany is expected to reach around 2.5GW, enough to power approximately 2.5 million households.

Operation and maintenance for Ørsted’s German offshore portfolio continues to be coordinated from Norden-Norddeich and Emden in East Frisia
