Ottawa Invests Over $1 Billion in New Brunswick’s Clean Energy Future

9 Dec 2024
The federal government has announced a significant investment of over $1 billion to enhance New Brunswick's clean electricity grid, with a focus on Indigenous-led projects and renewable energy initiatives.

At a media event in Dieppe, Federal Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault highlighted the key components of the funding. Ottawa will allocate nearly $1 billion to support up to 670 megawatts of Indigenous-led wind projects. Additionally, $25 million will be directed toward the 25-megawatt Neweg Energy wind project in Kings County, a collaboration with New Brunswick Mi'kmaq First Nations.

The plan also includes $25 million for NB Power to develop up to 600 megawatts of additional capacity at the existing Point Lepreau Nuclear Generation Station. Further commitments include converting the Belledune Generating Station from coal-fired power to biomass.

"This is a very exciting day for New Brunswick," Guilbeault said, emphasizing the shared goal of building a clean, reliable, and affordable electricity grid for the province.

The investments aim to accelerate New Brunswick's transition to renewable energy while fostering Indigenous partnerships and reducing carbon emissions.
