Pattern Energy Breaks Ground on SunZia: Largest Clean Energy Project in U.S. History Begins Construction

3 Jan 2024

Pattern Energy Group has secured $11 billion in non-recourse financing for the SunZia Transmission and SunZia Wind project, marking the largest clean energy infrastructure initiative in U.S. history. After an extensive 17-year journey navigating permits and approvals, construction is now underway, set to supply 3,000 MW of clean energy to Arizona and California.

SunZia Transmission, a 550-mile high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line, will stretch from central New Mexico to south-central Arizona, boasting a capacity to transport 3,000 MW across Western states. This infrastructure marvel is complemented by the SunZia Wind facility, Pattern Energy's 3,515 MW wind project, the largest in the Western Hemisphere, situated across Torrance, Lincoln, and San Miguel Counties in New Mexico.

With over 2,000 workers involved in on-site construction, the project has faced challenges, including a temporary halt due to concerns raised by Native American tribes about the potential impact on religious and cultural sites. However, the SunZia project aligns with the Biden administration's renewable energy goals, serving as a key component in boosting renewables and improving grid reliability over its 550-mile course.

Hunter Armistead, CEO of Pattern Energy, expressed optimism, stating, "Our hope is this successful financing... serves as an example for other ambitious renewable infrastructure initiatives that are needed to accelerate our transition to a carbon-free future."
