Pedaling Towards Sustainability: Netherlands Welcomes First 1,000 Square Meter Solar Cycle Paths

19 Dec 2023

In a groundbreaking move towards sustainable transportation infrastructure, the Netherlands has inaugurated its first solar cycle paths, each boasting an impressive 1,000 square meters (10,764 square feet) of solar surface area. Developed by the Colas Group's Wattway, in collaboration with BAM Royal Group, these solar-laden paths are strategically located in the North Holland and North Brabant provinces.

Wattway, a pioneer in solar road surfacing, has been refining its technology since its inception in 2015, with approximately 40 trial sites worldwide. The latest Dutch installations showcase an increase in power, producing 148 Wp/m² compared to older paths with 119 Wp/m². The provinces aim to contribute "160 MWh/year of renewable energy in its first year, helping to supply the Dutch grid." To ensure optimal performance, the sites will be diligently monitored and maintained for the next five years.

Crafted from a new type of solid solar panel, merely a few millimeters thick, Wattway's solar cycle paths employ solar cells coated in a multilayer substrate of resins and polymers. Translucent enough to harness sunlight and durable enough to endure bike traffic, these paths provide the same grip as conventional road mixes. This innovative approach leverages the Netherlands' extensive 35,000 km (21,748 miles) of cycle paths, offering a smart solution to harness clean energy without occupying additional land.
