Peru Greenlights $11.2B Green Hydrogen Project in Arequipa
Peru has approved the Horizonte de Verano green hydrogen project, a groundbreaking $11.2 billion initiative that positions the country as a leader in Latin America's clean energy sector. The Ministry of Production has greenlit the Detailed Environmental Impact Study (EIA-d) for the project, marking a major step toward sustainable industrialization.
Located in Arequipa, the facility will focus on producing green hydrogen for ammonia synthesis, supporting both chemical and energy industries. The project will also include a water desalination plant and a solar photovoltaic farm, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Sergio González Guerrero, Peru's Minister of Production, highlighted the project's importance, stating: "This is just the beginning of a new era for the national industry, in which innovation and sustainability will be fundamental pillars for economic growth." He further emphasized that the initiative would create jobs, drive regional development, and strengthen Peru's role in the global clean energy transition.
With its strategic location, abundant renewable resources, and competitive production costs, Peru is well-positioned to become a key player in the green hydrogen market.
