Poland Backs Grid Upgrade with $126M Grant to Energa-Operator
Energa-Operator, part of Orlen, has secured approximately $126 million (PLN 470 million / €110 million) in non-repayable funding to support the expansion and modernisation of electricity infrastructure in Poland. The grant was awarded under the country’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO) by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management.
The project, valued at around $166 million (PLN 630 million / €145 million), aims to deliver 260 MW of new connection capacity for both consumers and renewable energy sources. It will focus primarily on rural areas, while also covering selected urban municipalities linked to rural supply networks.
Planned works include the construction and reconstruction of nearly 250 km of high-voltage lines, the replacement of 41 transformers across 24 key substations, and the development of a new main power supply point, alongside upgrades to nine existing facilities.
The initiative also incorporates smart grid technologies, enabling real-time monitoring and remote network management. These features are expected to improve grid flexibility and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources.
The funding forms part of a broader investment programme by Energa-Operator, which includes over $2.5 billion (PLN 9.4 billion) in low-interest loans and total planned expenditures exceeding $10.7 billion (PLN 40 billion) by 2035. The programme is a key component of Poland’s efforts to strengthen energy security and expand renewable energy capacity.
