Prysmian Connects Neart na Gaoithe Offshore Wind Farm to Scottish Mainland

9 Apr 2024

Prysmian, successfully completed the installation of submarine and land power cables for the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm in the UK. Situated 15.5 km off the Fife coast in eastern Scotland, this wind farm is poised to generate up to 450 MW of green and renewable energy, powering approximately 375,000 Scottish homes.

The project involved the design, supply, and installation of two HVAC 220 kV three-core extruded export submarine cables, which land at Thorntonloch beach in East Lothian. Prysmian also provided the necessary land cables to connect the wind farm to the Scottish mainland power grid, showcasing its expertise in delivering comprehensive energy solutions.

Despite encountering challenges such as coordinating with multiple contractors and navigating the complexities of sea-land cable landing, Prysmian successfully managed the project within the set timelines. Lubna Gemey, Project Manager for the offshore activities, highlighted the extensive efforts put into interfacing with other project stakeholders, ensuring smooth collaboration and efficient execution.

Moreover, Prysmian's commitment to safety and quality was evident throughout the project, with over 600,000 worked manhours resulting in zero lost time injuries. Despite the additional hurdles posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Prysmian maintained its focus on personnel safety while adhering to project timelines, reflecting its dedication to delivering sustainable energy solutions.

As the project enters its testing and commissioning phase, Prysmian's contributions to the Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm underscore its role in advancing Scotland's renewable energy ambitions and reducing CO2 emissions.
