Prysmian Secures Milestone Agreement for Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) Cable Connection in the UK

5 Jul 2023

Prysmian Group, a global leader in energy and telecom cable systems, has achieved a significant milestone by securing an agreement with SP Transmission plc and National Grid Electricity Transmission plc, two GB transmission grid owners.

As the exclusive preferred bidder, Prysmian will receive an initial payment of €85 million and ensure its continued capacity availability for the construction of the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) cable connection. The EGL1 project entails a 200 km high voltage direct current (HVDC) submarine and underground cable link, connecting Torness in Scotland to Hawthorn Pit in the North of England. With a power transmission capacity of 2 GW, EGL1 will be the first cable system in the UK to utilize 525 kV HVDC technology with extruded XLPE insulation.

The EGL1 project is part of a comprehensive plan to reinforce the UK transmission network, enabling the expansion of renewable generation in the north and supporting the goal of achieving 50 GW of offshore wind generation by 2030. By facilitating the flow of renewable energy from the north to the south, EGL1 contributes to the country's ambition of achieving a Net Zero economy by 2050. The project includes the installation of a 400 kV HVAC cable system to connect the converter station and grid substation in Scotland. Prysmian's involvement in this vital infrastructure development underscores its expertise in providing advanced cable solutions for the energy sector and its commitment to supporting the transition to a sustainable energy future in the UK.
