Puerto Rico’s Energy Grid to See Major Boost with New Renewable Energy Agreement

10 Feb 2025
LUMA, the system operator for Puerto Rico's electric grid, has signed a landmark agreement with Linxon US LLC and Atkins Réalis Caribe to enhance the island's energy infrastructure. The deal will involve the construction of nine interconnection points for large-scale renewable energy projects, adding over 990 MW of clean energy and more than 700 MW of energy storage to Puerto Rico's grid.

This initiative is expected to address recurring energy generation outages, a problem that caused over 100 load-shed events in 2024. LUMA President and CEO Juan Saca highlighted that the new capacity will help stabilize the grid and contribute to a more resilient, sustainable, and affordable energy system for Puerto Rico.

In addition to boosting renewable energy generation, the project is set to reduce the island's dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate energy price volatility. It is also expected to create over 4,200 construction jobs and 139 permanent positions, with a $4 billion private investment supporting the effort.

The project aligns with Puerto Rico's energy transformation goals, marking a significant step toward a cleaner and more reliable energy future.
