Puget Sound Energy Signs 200 MW Wind Power Deal with Avangrid
Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has signed a long-term agreement with Avangrid to add nearly 200 megawatts of wind power to its electricity portfolio through the Big Horn I wind project in Klickitat County, Washington.
The project is expected to supply enough electricity to power approximately 70,000 homes annually once operational. It forms part of the utility’s broader strategy to meet Washington State’s requirement for greenhouse gas-neutral electricity by 2030 under the Clean Energy Transformation Act (CETA).
“We are excited that this latest agreement with Avangrid helps us meet some of the most ambitious clean energy laws in the nation while delivering on our customers’ expectations,” said Craig Pospisil, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Puget Sound Energy.
The Big Horn I wind facility, originally commissioned in 2006, is undergoing refurbishment and is expected to return to service by fall 2028. The agreement covers roughly 12% of the utility’s remaining clean energy needs.
According to Puget Sound Energy, renewable resources currently account for about 58% of its electricity supply, up from 26% in 2019, with the remainder coming from natural gas and other sources.
The utility stated that it continues to face challenges in meeting the 2030 target, including rising electricity demand, permitting delays, grid interconnection constraints, and increased costs for renewable development.
Avangrid, a renewable energy subsidiary of Iberdrola, operates the wind project as part of a broader clean energy portfolio in the region.
