Quest One Launches Advanced Hydrogen Gigahub in Hamburg

8 Oct 2024
Quest One, a subsidiary of MAN Energy Solutions, has officially launched a gigahub in Rahlstedt dedicated to the automated, serial production of electrolysis stacks for green hydrogen. The facility, which was inaugurated on October 1, 2024, by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Hamburg's Mayor Peter Tschentscher, is set to become a significant player in the green hydrogen sector.

The gigahub is poised to be one of Europe's most advanced production centers for electrolysis technologies. Uwe Lauber, CEO of MAN Energy Solutions, highlighted that the facility is a key milestone in Europe's hydrogen economy, with a potential electrolysis capacity of over five gigawatts annually.

Electrolysis stacks, the core technology of electrolyzers, split water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy. With automated production processes, the new plant aims to reduce production times by 75%, according to Robin von Plettenberg, CEO of Quest One. This development is expected to accelerate Germany's hydrogen ramp-up and strengthen Hamburg as a leading hydrogen hub.

The project is part of the H2Giga flagship initiative, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and aims to make green hydrogen competitive with fossil fuels.
