Renewable Energy Groups Sue Pentagon Over Wind Project Review Delays

A coalition of renewable energy organizations is seeking a court order to compel the U.S. Department of Defense to resume reviews of proposed wind energy projects, arguing that delays have effectively stalled new wind development across the United States.

The groups filed a motion in federal court after alleging that military reviews required for most new wind farms have been halted since April. According to court filings, at least 106 planned projects in 21 states are affected, representing an estimated $47 billion in potential investment.

The review process is intended to ensure that wind turbines do not interfere with military radar systems, flight paths, or other national security operations. Industry representatives say the process had historically been routine, with projects typically receiving determinations within months.

The Pentagon has stated that it continues to evaluate land-based wind projects to ensure compliance with national security requirements but has declined to comment on the ongoing litigation.

According to the lawsuit, prolonged delays could jeopardize project financing, federal tax credit eligibility, and future development plans. A significant number of the affected projects are located in Texas, the nation's leading wind power-producing state.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between the renewable energy sector and federal policymakers over the future of wind power development in the United States.
