Trump Administration Scraps Billions in Federal Climate Project Funding
The Trump administration announced on October 1, 2025, the cancellation of nearly $8 billion in federal funding for climate-related projects in states predominantly controlled by Democrats. This announcement was made by Russell Vought, Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
The funding cuts coincide with the recent federal government shutdown triggered by Congress's failure to pass a stopgap spending bill. Earlier the same day, Vought also revealed a freeze on about $18 billion in federal funds allocated for two major infrastructure projects in New York City.
In a post on the social media platform X, Vought described the canceled climate funding as part of a so-called "Green New Scam" aimed at advancing the political left's climate agenda.
The affected states include California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
The administration's move has drawn attention as these states were carried by then-Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
The U.S. Department of Energy is expected to provide more information on the impact of these funding cancellations.
