US Expands 50% Steel Tariffs to Wind Turbines and Related Components

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on August 19, 2025, the expansion of steel and aluminum tariffs to include 407 additional product categories under Section 232 sectoral tariffs. The newly covered products will now face a 50% duty rate on their steel and aluminum content.

The expanded list includes wind turbines and their components, heavy equipment such as mobile cranes and bulldozers, railcars, furniture, compressors, pumps, and hundreds of other derivative products. This move aims to close loopholes that previously allowed tariff circumvention and to support the revitalization of the American steel and aluminum industries.

Jeffrey Kessler, Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, emphasized that this action strengthens the steel and aluminum sector and builds on previous measures by the Trump Administration. Earlier efforts included raising tariffs from 25% to 50% and eliminating exemptions to better protect domestic manufacturers.

The Department of Commerce operates an annual product inclusion process, with the next window for public submissions opening in September.

A detailed list of the newly added products and further information are available in the Federal Register.
