RWE Launches $253 Million Battery Storage Project in Pembroke

2 Dec 2025
RWE has confirmed a $253 million (£200 million) investment in its largest UK energy storage project at the Pembroke Power Station site in South Wales. The facility will feature 212 lithium-ion battery containers, providing a peak capacity of 350 megawatts (MW) for two hours, or 700 megawatt-hours (MWh) of storage.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2026, with commissioning expected in the second half of 2028, pending an updated grid connection. The 5.1-hectare site will form part of the Pembroke Net Zero Centre, an industrial decarbonisation platform led by RWE.

The battery system will support grid stability by storing surplus electricity and releasing it during peak demand periods. The 350 MW output is sufficient to power nearly 300,000 typical UK homes for two hours. The project secured planning consent in January and will participate in the UK Capacity Market, helping to strengthen national energy supply amid growing renewable energy variability.

As part of the development, RWE will implement biodiversity measures including meadow creation, native woodland planting, and a wildlife pond, ensuring environmental considerations without affecting industrial operations. The company already operates more than 3 gigawatts (GW) of capacity in Wales, including around 1 GW from renewable sources, and employs roughly 300 people in the region.

The project highlights Wales’ growing role in attracting large-scale energy infrastructure investment and contributes to broader efforts to enhance the flexibility and resilience of the UK energy system.
