Schneider Electric and E.ON Partner on SF₆-Free Switchgear
Schneider Electric and E.ON have signed a long-term framework agreement to accelerate the deployment of SF₆-free medium-voltage switchgear across E.ON's European network. The agreement will see Schneider Electric supplying a significant portion of both primary and secondary switchgear, helping E.ON comply with the EU F-Gas Regulation that bans SF₆ in new medium-voltage equipment from January 2026.
SF₆ (sulfur hexafluoride) is a potent greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 24,300 times greater than CO₂. The transition to SF₆-free technology, such as Schneider Electric's AirSeT switchgear, is critical for reducing environmental impact while maintaining grid reliability and efficiency.
Lisbeth Buschkühl, Chief Procurement Officer of E.ON SE, emphasized the importance of investing in future-proof energy infrastructure to support Germany's green transformation. Meanwhile, Melton Chang, Executive Vice President of Power Systems at Schneider Electric, highlighted the partnership's role in advancing sustainable, digital energy solutions.
The agreement builds on over 20 years of cooperation between the two companies and follows successful pilot projects assessing SF₆-free gas-insulated switchgear. Production will be supported by Schneider Electric's industrial centers in Germany and Hungary, reflecting the company's commitment to sustainable innovation in Europe.
