ScottishPower Selects Siemens Gamesa for $1,3 Billion Offshore Turbine Contract
ScottishPower has awarded a turbine supply contract worth more than $1.3 billion to Siemens Gamesa for its $5.2 billion East Anglia TWO offshore wind farm, following the project’s success in the UK’s recent renewables auction.
The agreement covers 64 SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines, each featuring a 236-meter rotor. Once operational, the wind farm—located 33km off the Suffolk coast—will have a generating capacity of up to 960MW, supplying clean electricity equivalent to nearly one million homes.
Turbine blades for the project will be manufactured at Siemens Gamesa’s Hull facility, which employs around 1,300 people after substantial recruitment over the past year. The contract adds further momentum to the company’s UK manufacturing footprint and aligns with ScottishPower’s decision to double its domestic investment to £24 billion between 2024 and 2028.
UK leaders welcomed the announcement. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the project supports national security, economic growth, and long-term climate goals. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband described it as a major vote of confidence in the UK’s renewables sector and central to the country’s clean power mission.
Keith Anderson, CEO of ScottishPower, said the agreement demonstrates how large-scale renewable projects can boost UK supply chains and jobs, while stressing the need to accelerate planning and grid development.
Darren Davidson, UK and Ireland vice president for Siemens Energy and Siemens Gamesa, said the Hull factory is contributing to both the energy transition and regional economic growth.
East Anglia TWO follows previous ScottishPower offshore developments, including East Anglia ONE and East Anglia THREE. Together, the portfolio will generate enough electricity to power more than three million homes.
