Shell Energy Europe to Power Google UK with Carbon-Free Energy
Shell (Shell Energy Europe Limited), a subsidiary of Shell plc, has been appointed as the renewable energy supply manager for Google UK under the Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) model. The collaboration aims to power Google's UK operations entirely with clean energy by 2030.
The partnership will leverage SHEL's expertise in electricity trading, portfolio optimization, and battery energy storage systems to manage the variability of wind and solar power. Storage units will absorb excess energy during peak production and release it when demand is high, ensuring a continuous, reliable clean energy supply tailored to Google's operations.
This announcement coincides with the opening of Google's Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire data centre, which will support AI services including Google Cloud, Gmail, Search, and Maps. The facility is projected to operate with 95% CFE supply by 2026, highlighting Google's commitment to sustainable digital infrastructure.
By providing tailored renewable energy solutions, SHEL not only helps Google achieve ambitious decarbonization goals but also strengthens the stability of the UK electricity grid, supporting the nation's transition toward a low-carbon energy future.
