Shine Solar’s In-House Training Program Ensures Compliance with Strict Licensing Standards

26 Sep 2023

Arkansas, which saw a significant uptick in solar installations in 2022, has been grappling with the challenge of aligning solar licensing requirements with the surging solar market. Shine Solar, a prominent residential installer based in Rogers, Arkansas, has stepped up to the plate, tackling the complex issue of licensing and regulation standards in this emerging solar state.

Unlike most states, where contractors must hold an electrician's license for solar PV installations, Arkansas imposes even stricter rules. The state mandates that every worker on a solar project must either be a registered apprentice or a licensed electrician. This unique requirement has posed challenges for solar installers.

Chris Trudo, President of Operations and Fulfillment for Shine Solar, explained the struggle: "The struggle that we've been seeing in Arkansas particularly has just been the balance between, what does a solar installer look like and what is the licensing that's needed for that [vs.] for an electrician?"

In response to this challenge, Shine Solar launched the Shine Solar Academy, an in-house training program designed to meet the state's stringent requirements. This program combines online and in-person classroom hours with on-the-job training, offering a two-year residential electrical wiring license and a four-year journeyman electrical license. The Academy, which started in October 2022, currently has 35 students enrolled, with seven set to receive their licenses this year.

Trudo emphasized the benefits of this program, stating that graduates not only acquire the necessary licenses but also possess a deep understanding of Shine Solar's systems and quality standards. This commitment to compliance ensures that Shine Solar delivers high-quality installations and maintains positive customer relationships.

As Arkansas continues to refine its solar licensing regulations, Shine Solar's proactive approach with its in-house training program positions it as a leader in compliance and workforce development.
