Siemens Energy to Supply Electrolyzers for Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub

10 Sep 2024
Siemens Energy is collaborating with Luxcara and Hamburger Energiewerke GmbH to advance green hydrogen production in Germany. The partnership, known as the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub (HGHH), will establish a 100 MW electrolysis plant at the site of the former coal-fired power plant in Hamburg Moorburg.

The contract includes the provision of six units of Siemens Energy's latest proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser model. These units will be manufactured at Siemens Energy's new Gigafactory in Berlin, assembled at its Muhlheim site, and at a European partner location. Siemens Energy will also offer maintenance services under a 10-year agreement.

Construction is slated to begin in 2025, with commissioning expected in 2027. Once operational, the HGHH is projected to produce approximately 10,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. The project has received funding from the IPCEI Hy2Infra package, approved by the European Commission in February.
