Solar Power Plays Hero in Europe’s Heatwave Energy Crisis

10 Aug 2023

As Europe faced scorching heatwaves and soaring electricity demand due to record-breaking temperatures, solar power emerged as a crucial savior in averting energy shortages. The surge in solar energy generation, especially in southern European countries like Spain and Greece, proved pivotal in meeting the heightened demand for air conditioning during the hottest times of the day. Solar's ability to align with peak demand for cooling, thanks to its strongest radiation during those hours, played a vital role in stabilizing the energy grids.

Spain's significant increase in solar capacity, with a record 4.5 gigawatts of solar photovoltaic added last year, led to a substantial boost in solar energy output. Data revealed that solar accounted for almost 24% of Spain's electricity in July 2023, a notable rise from 16% in the same month the previous year. Likewise, Greece witnessed solar photovoltaics covering 3.5GW of the total 10.35GW demand during peak power consumption on July 24. Even countries like Belgium saw solar energy covering over 100% of the additional energy required during midday spikes in power demand.

While solar played a pivotal role, analysts attribute part of Europe's energy system resilience to lower power demand resulting from consumer and industrial responses to high energy prices. However, the energy landscape's future challenges loom large as climate change is expected to escalate heatwaves and intensify strain on energy infrastructure. Calls for accelerated investments in energy grids and the coupling of solar with energy storage underscore the urgent need to bolster sustainable energy solutions to combat the escalating climate crisis.
