SP Energy Networks and Hitachi Energy Partner to Revolutionize Grid Stability in the UK

4 Apr 2024

Hitachi Energy has secured a significant order from SP Energy Networks to implement a pioneering power quality solution aimed at enhancing grid stability and accommodating the increasing influx of renewable energy across the UK. The project, situated at SP Energy Networks' Eccles substation, will see the integration of SVC Light STATCOM and synchronous condenser technologies, controlled centrally by Hitachi Energy's advanced MACH™ control system. This unique combination promises to bolster the grid's capability while fostering the transition away from fossil fuels.

The collaborative effort between Hitachi Energy and SP Energy Networks aims to address the pressing need for grid modernization amidst the growing renewable energy landscape. By deploying cutting-edge technologies like SVC Light STATCOM and synchronous condenser, the project seeks to optimize power flow and system resilience, thereby facilitating the seamless integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. This development marks a significant milestone in the UK's journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Billy Moore, Senior Project Manager at SP Energy Networks, emphasizes the pivotal role of this innovative solution in increasing the grid's transfer capacity by up to 280 MW, thereby supporting Scotland's renewable energy ambitions. Marco Berardi, Head of Grid & Power Quality Solutions and Service business at Hitachi Energy, underscores the importance of collaboration in driving forward such transformative projects, expressing excitement over the partnership's contribution to maintaining grid stability and enabling clean electricity flow in the UK.

As renewable energy adoption surges, the challenges faced by transmission system operators intensify. The integration of SVC Light STATCOM and synchronous condenser technologies, coupled with advanced control systems, presents a robust solution to voltage management and system resilience, laying the foundation for a more sustainable energy ecosystem in the UK.
