Spain Expands Clean Energy Push with $555 Million for Wind and Hydro Upgrades
Spain has provisionally allocated approximately $555 million (€512 million) in public funding to support the modernization of wind and hydroelectric energy facilities across the country, with 149 renewable energy projects selected in 16 autonomous communities. The funding is part of the government’s second Circular Repowering Programme (REPOTEN 2), managed through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE) under the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).
According to the preliminary resolution published by IDAE, the selected initiatives include 80 wind energy modernization projects and 69 hydroelectric facility upgrades involving plants with capacities of up to 50 MW.
The funding, backed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery funds, was increased from an initial allocation of roughly $317 million (€292 million) to $555 million (€512 million) following high demand for the program. The initiative aims to improve the efficiency and operational performance of aging renewable infrastructure through equipment replacement and technological upgrades.
Government data indicates that approximately 65% of the provisionally selected projects include hybrid battery storage systems. Together, the projects are expected to add around 2 GWh of storage capacity and contribute 3.3 GW of generation power. Total planned investment linked to the projects is estimated to exceed $4 billion (€3.7 billion).
Among the regions receiving the highest number of approved projects are Galicia, with 35 projects, followed by Andalusia and Castile and León, each with 24 projects.
The program forms part of Spain’s broader energy transition strategy focused on increasing renewable generation capacity, improving grid stability, and reducing the environmental impact of older infrastructure. Wind and hydroelectric power continue to play a central role in the country’s renewable energy mix.
The current list of selected projects remains provisional and may be adjusted following the review period before the final resolution is issued.
