Spain’s Repsol Invests €300 Million in Cartagena Renewable Hydrogen Facility

2 Oct 2025
Repsol, in partnership with Enagás Renovable, has announced the construction of its first large-scale renewable hydrogen plant at its industrial complex in Cartagena, Spain. The project features a 100 MW electrolyzer capable of producing around 15,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually, aimed at reducing carbon emissions by up to 167,000 tonnes per year.

The initiative, recognized as a strategic project of common European interest (IPCEI) by the European Commission, will receive €155 million in funding from the Spanish Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE). The total investment exceeds €300 million.

The plant, expected to be operational by 2029, will support Spain's Hydrogen Valley initiative in the Murcia region and create approximately 900 jobs during its development. The renewable hydrogen produced will replace conventional hydrogen used as feedstock in various industrial processes, helping Repsol lower its carbon footprint.

Repsol currently leads hydrogen production in Spain, responsible for 60% of national output and 4% of European consumption. The project also allows for future integration of renewable hydrogen into the natural gas network and the Spanish Hydrogen Backbone.

Enagás Renovable, holding a 25% stake in the project, specializes in renewable gases and decarbonization efforts, with 20 projects underway in Spain.
