Storm to Build Major Energy Storage Projects with $380M Funding
Storm, a Belgian developer and operator of renewable energy infrastructure, has secured $380 million (€330 million) in financing to support the construction of two large-scale battery parks in Ruien (Kluisbergen) and Langerlo (Genk).
The investment is made in partnership with I4B – The Belgian Infrastructure Fund, PMV, and TINC, alongside a consortium of banks including Belfius, ING, KBC Bank, Rabobank, Santander, Société Générale, and Triodos Bank. The financing will support both equity and project development.
The Ruien battery park will have a capacity of 200 MW and storage of 800 MWh, while the Langerlo site will provide 100 MW and 400 MWh. Both projects use lithium-ion technology supplied and installed by Tesla.
The Ruien facility is being built on a former coal-fired power plant site and will span over three hectares. With 180 battery units, it is expected to be among the largest battery installations in Europe. Commissioning is planned for autumn 2027. The Langerlo project is located in the port of Genk-South and is scheduled for completion in summer 2027.
According to Jan Caerts, CEO of Storm, the projects mark a key step in strengthening energy infrastructure: “With these projects, we are taking an important step in the development of flexible energy infrastructure in our country. Large-scale battery storage is essential for maintaining the stability of the electricity system and enabling the further integration of renewable energy.”
Storm also continues to expand its renewable energy portfolio, including additional wind and storage projects, as part of its broader energy strategy.
