Sungrow, WBHO Partner on Africa’s Largest 500 MW Solar Project
Sungrow, a global provider of inverter and energy storage technology, has partnered with South African construction firm WBHO to deliver a 500-megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) project in South Africa's Free State province. The project is described as the largest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa.
The initiative is being developed by the NOA Group, an integrated renewable energy utility. It comprises two wheeling solar PV facilities located at Khauta West and South, and will use approximately 712,000 bifacial solar modules mounted on single-axis trackers.
Sungrow will supply its 1+X Modular Inverter system and string combiner boxes to support the installation. The company states that its technology will help maintain grid stability and operational efficiency.
The solar project is NOA Group's first utility-scale development and is designed to supply clean electricity to industrial and commercial clients across South Africa through energy wheeling agreements.
The installation is expected to contribute to South Africa's renewable energy goals, support grid modernization, and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Construction timelines, commissioning dates, and project cost details were not disclosed.
