T1 Energy Begins Construction on $425M Texas Solar Cell Plant
T1 Energy has begun construction on its new G2 Austin solar cell manufacturing facility in Milam County, Texas, marking a major expansion in domestic solar production. The company plans to invest between $400 million and $425 million in the project, which will span over 100 acres near Rockdale.
The first phase of G2 Austin is expected to produce 2.1 GW of high-efficiency TOPCon solar cells annually, with production slated to begin by the end of 2026. This initial output exceeds the current total silicon-based solar cell production capacity in the United States.
The facility is expected to create up to 1,800 jobs in advanced manufacturing. Solar cells produced at G2 Austin will supply modules manufactured at T1 Energy’s G1 Dallas facility. The second phase of the project could increase production to 3.2 GW, with further expansion possible if demand rises.
Dan Barcelo, Chairman and CEO of T1 Energy, described the facility as a key part of the company’s strategy to develop an integrated US supply chain for polysilicon-based solar energy.
The development of G2 Austin reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic renewable energy manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains for solar technology.
