Taiwan Inaugurates First Offshore Power Cable Factory Through Walsin–NKT Joint Venture
Taiwan has taken a significant step in expanding its offshore wind supply chain with the inauguration of its first offshore power cable factory, operated by Walsin Energy Cable System (WECS), a joint venture between Walsin Lihwa and NKT. The facility marks a major milestone in the country’s push to strengthen domestic manufacturing capacity for renewable energy infrastructure.
The new plant spans 231,000 square metres and includes a 50-metre extrusion tower designed for the production of high- and medium-voltage AC offshore power cables. These cables will primarily supply Taiwan’s growing offshore wind market, which continues to scale as the nation advances its long-term energy transition and net-zero ambitions.
Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT, described the inauguration as a key achievement for the partnership formed in 2023, highlighting its role in supporting both Taiwan’s energy autonomy and global clean-energy goals. Mr. Yu-Lon Chiao, Chairman of Walsin Energy Cable System, noted that the collaboration has enabled rapid construction of the facility and opens wider opportunities across the Asia-Pacific region.
Commercial production is expected to begin in 2027 following type testing and prequalification processes.
