Tata Power Signs 120 MWh Battery Storage Agreement with NHPC in Kerala
Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL), a subsidiary of The Tata Power Company Limited, has signed a Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with NHPC Limited for a 120 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Kerala.
This marks TPREL's first standalone BESS contract. The project, secured through a competitive bidding process for Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEB), involves deploying a 30 MW / 120 MWh BESS at a 220 kV substation in Kerala. It is scheduled for commissioning within 15 months and will operate under a 12-year BESPA.
The initiative is part of NHPC's larger effort to develop 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone battery storage in the state, supported by viability gap funding and implemented under guidelines from the Ministry of Power.
The project aims to improve grid flexibility, manage peak demand, and support the integration of renewable energy in Kerala. It contributes to the Government of India's broader goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.
In addition to this project, TPREL is already operating a 100 MW solar + 120 MWh BESS project in Chhattisgarh, awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI).
With this new contract, TPREL's total renewable energy portfolio stands at approximately 10.9 GW, including 5.6 GW in operation and 5.3 GW under development.
