Tata Power Wins 30 MW Battery Storage Deal

21 Jul 2025
Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) has secured a 30 MW / 120 MWh battery energy storage project from NHPC Ltd, a government-owned utility. The system will support Kerala State Electricity Board Ltd (KSEB) and be installed at a 220 kV substation in Kerala.

The project, awarded under NHPC's BESS Tranche-I initiative, will deliver 30 MW of power for up to four hours, helping to stabilize the grid and support peak power demand. This marks TPREL's first-ever Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA), signed for a 12-year term.

Set to become operational within 15 months, the battery facility supports NHPC's larger goal of developing 125 MW / 500 MWh of standalone battery storage in Kerala. The initiative is being implemented under a Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding model and benefits from Viability Gap Funding.

With this project, TPREL's total renewable energy portfolio rises to 10.9 GW, including 5.6 GW in operation and 5.3 GW under development. The broader Tata Power group currently manages a 15.7 GW portfolio, with 6.9 GW of clean energy, and aims for carbon neutrality by 2045.
