The Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security has started the authorization process for the Sardinian Link, a $325 million infrastructure project by Terna, Italy's national electricity transmission operator.
Led by Giuseppina Di Foggia, Terna's initiative aims to modernize Sardinia's power grid, improving energy efficiency, stability, and renewable integration. The 220 kV line will connect Codrongianos, Oristano, Sulcis, Villasor, and Selargius, spanning roughly 250 kilometers (155 miles) and offering up to 1,000 MW of exchange capacity between northern and southern Sardinia.
The project aligns with Italy's National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) and the EU's 2030 climate targets, strengthening the island's internal grid and supporting renewable sources such as future offshore wind farms.
A key innovation is Terna's patented "5-Phase" pylons, which are lighter, more compact, and designed to reduce electromagnetic emissions. The infrastructure forms part of the company's "Hypergrid" model -- a next-generation, digitalized, and resilient transmission framework.
Once completed, the Sardinian Link is expected to enhance reliability, reduce maintenance needs, and improve renewable energy distribution, contributing to Italy's broader decarbonization and energy resilience goals.
