Terra‑Gen Brings Monte Cristo I Wind Project Online in Texas
Terra‑Gen, a major U.S. renewable energy developer jointly owned by Masdar and Igneo Infrastructure Partners, has officially commissioned its Monte Cristo I Windpower Project in Hidalgo County, Texas. The 238.5‑MW facility is expected to generate more than 850 GWh annually, enough to power approximately 81,000 homes.
The wind farm’s capacity is backed by long-term power purchase agreements with two corporate buyers. Construction created around 280 jobs at peak activity, logging more than 490,000 work-hours without a lost-time incident. Infrastructure improvements included upgrades to over 11 miles of state roads and 25 miles of county roads in Hidalgo County.
Officials highlighted both the clean energy and economic impact. John O’Connor, Terra‑Gen CFO, stated the project reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable energy and community investment. Edinburg Mayor Omar Ochoa and Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez emphasized the project’s role in supporting local economic growth and public services.
Monte Cristo I is Terra‑Gen’s second wind project in Texas, bringing the company’s total clean energy generation in the state to 273 MW, including the Texas Big Spring facility. Phase 2 of Monte Cristo is already permitted, with development underway.
The project is expected to generate over $100 million during its lifetime in property taxes, landowner payments, and other local contributions, underscoring its long-term economic benefits in addition to clean energy production.
