Tesla to Build China’s Largest Grid-Scale Battery Plant in Shanghai
Tesla has signed its first agreement to develop a grid-scale battery storage power plant in China, a project that will become the largest of its kind in the country upon completion.
The $556 million deal, first reported by Chinese media outlet Yicai and confirmed by Tesla on Weibo, was signed with the Shanghai local government and China Kangfu International Leasing. The announcement marks a major expansion of Tesla's energy storage business in one of the world's fastest-growing clean energy markets.
Tesla's Shanghai Megapack factory produced over 100 Megapacks in Q1 2025. Each Megapack can deliver up to 1 megawatt of power for four hours and is designed for utility-scale deployment.
According to Tesla, the grid-side storage project will act as a "smart regulator" to stabilize urban electricity demand and support the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar.
This deal is seen as strategic amid rising demand for energy storage and growing competition from domestic players like CATL and BYD, which hold significant market share in China's battery sector. CATL is also expected to supply some of the battery components for Tesla's Megapacks.
China plans to install 40 GW of battery-powered electricity capacity by the end of 2025. Global battery energy storage capacity surged by 42 GW in 2023, according to the International Energy Agency.
Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China, Tesla continues to expand its operations in the region, exporting Megapacks from its Shanghai plant to Europe and Asia.
