TMEIC to Install Japan’s First Onshore Power System with Frequency Conversion for Public Piers

18 Jul 2024
TMEIC Corporation has received an order to install Japan's first onshore power supply system with frequency conversion equipment for public piers at Yokohama's Honmoku Pier. This initiative, undertaken with The Kodensha Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, aims to promote carbon-neutral ports by providing shore-side power to berthed ships.

Currently, berthed ships use onboard generators, contributing significantly to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The new system will reduce these emissions by supplying power from shore, mitigating the output of carbon dioxide, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides. Ships typically operate at 60Hz, while East Japan uses 50Hz, necessitating frequency conversion. TMEIC's technology ensures seamless power conversion and quality compliance with both Japanese and international standards.

This development aligns with the International Maritime Organization's goal of zero GHG emissions by 2050. With berthed ships accounting for approximately 38% of coastal transportation sector emissions, the new system is expected to have a significant positive environmental impact.

TMEIC is committed to expanding its range of frequency conversion devices to support carbon-neutral ports globally.
