Toshiba to Invest $370 Million to Expand Power Transmission and Distribution Equipment Production
Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation (Toshiba) announced a $370 million (¥55 billion) investment to expand its power transmission and distribution (T&D) equipment production capacity in Japan and India.
The investment, to be completed by fiscal year 2027, is expected to more than double Toshiba's combined T&D production capacity by FY2030 compared with FY2024 levels. This follows a previous $135 million (¥20 billion) plan announced in July 2024, with an additional $235 million (¥35 billion) now allocated to address faster-than-anticipated growth in global electricity demand.
Funding will support new and modernized production lines at Toshiba's Hamakawasaki Operations in Kawasaki, Japan, and Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems (India) Pvt. Ltd. (TTDI) in Hyderabad, India.
Hiroshi Kaneta, Vice President of Toshiba's Grid Solution Division, said the expanded investment responds to "rising global electricity demand" and the need to ensure stable T&D equipment supply. He cited infrastructure renewal, renewable energy expansion, and data center growth in Japan, as well as strong economic and population growth in India, as key factors.
Toshiba will also renovate employee facilities in Japan and broaden TTDI's product lineup to better serve markets in India, North America, Europe, and the Middle East. The company said the initiative will strengthen global manufacturing capabilities, enhance competitiveness, and support the transition to a more sustainable and reliable power grid.
