TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Invest €600 Million in Green Hydrogen Production in the Netherlands
TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have unveiled plans to invest €600 million (around USD 627 million) in two green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands, leveraging offshore wind energy. The initiative aims to produce 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, significantly reducing carbon emissions in the refining industry.
One project will involve a 50/50 joint venture to build a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery, set to begin operations by 2029. This facility is expected to produce 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, cutting 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions.
The second project focuses on Air Liquide's Elygator electrolyzer in Rotterdam, powered by TotalEnergies' OranjeWind offshore wind farm. The facility will supply 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to a refinery in Antwerp, Belgium, reducing carbon emissions by 150,000 tons.
These efforts align with the companies' goals to decarbonize the refining sector by 2030. TotalEnergies, a leader in integrated energy, is leveraging its offshore wind power capabilities to support this transition. The global demand for low-carbon hydrogen is growing, especially in hard-to-abate industries like refining, with hydrogen expected to play a key role in reducing emissions.
