TotalEnergies H2, the hydrogen-focused joint venture between TotalEnergies and Eren, has formally submitted an environmental impact study for its planned H2 Magallanes Project in Chile. The $16 billion initiative aims to produce up to 1.9 million tonnes of green ammonia annually, primarily for export.

The proposed facility, located in the San Gregorio commune in southern Chile, would span approximately 72,000 hectares, with 4,000 hectares allocated for infrastructure including wind turbines, electrolysers, production and storage units, and a desalination-enabled port terminal.

The project has entered Chile's Environmental Impact Assessment System (SEIA), with permitting expected to extend until 2027. Production could begin by 2030 if approvals proceed on schedule. According to H2 View, a plant of this scale would likely require nearly 2GW of electrolysis capacity.

TotalEnergies H2 highlighted the region's strong wind resources and strategic location near the Strait of Magellan as key advantages. The move aligns with Chile's national green hydrogen strategy, which targets up to 25GW of production capacity by 2030.

Large-scale hydrogen projects are increasingly rare amid global investor caution, making the H2 Magallanes Project one of the more ambitious developments currently underway.
