Transforming Coal to Solar: $90M Awarded for Pennsylvania’s Massive Solar Project

25 Mar 2024

Pennsylvania's largest solar farm project, the Mineral Basin Solar Project, has received a significant boost with a $90 million federal funding allocation. Situated on 2,700 acres of reclaimed coal mining land near the closed Homer City coal plant, this initiative marks a crucial step in transitioning Pennsylvania's energy landscape. Spearheaded by renewables developer Swift Current Energy (SCE), the 402 MW utility-scale solar farm is projected to power 75,000 homes, effectively filling the void left by the closure of the state's largest coal plant in July 2023.

The Mineral Basin Solar Project, located in Clearfield County west of State College, serves as a testament to Pennsylvania's commitment to renewable energy. Swift Current Energy plans to explore incorporating offsite battery energy storage, enhancing the project's efficiency and reliability. Moreover, Mineral Basin sets the stage for SCE's ambitious goal of developing 1,000 MW of solar capacity on former coal mine sites across the Appalachian region over the next five years.

The funding, announced by the US Department of Energy, aligns with President Biden's infrastructure agenda, emphasizing the importance of clean energy solutions and job creation in regions grappling with energy transition challenges. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm highlighted the project's role in revitalizing local economies and supporting sustainable development. With over 750 construction jobs and six operational positions expected to be created, Mineral Basin promises significant economic benefits, including $1.1 million in annual tax revenue for local communities.

Anticipated to commence construction this summer and become operational by the second half of 2026, Pennsylvania's largest solar farm represents a landmark initiative in renewable energy adoption. Backed by a 20-year power purchase agreement from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), Mineral Basin Solar Power, LLC, pledges nearly $20 million in economic development investments to empower regional upskilling and reskilling efforts across high-demand sectors, fostering a sustainable and inclusive future.
